Wycombe District Ramblers

Nearing the end of the Heatwave now so 5 entrepid ramblers set off from Cadmore End on a hilly but well wooded walk.   Up and over Hanger Wood and down into Fingest with great views across the valley.  Then, onto Turville where hollyhocks gave us great displays.  We then traversed upwards to walk along the side of the valley all the way to Ibstone church where we had our banana break. We continued west in woodland, then turned right to cross the road to descend into the next valley, going over a very classic 3-step stile. Walking on the flat in shade for a while then across a field to our final gate, only to find it blocked by branches.  Alan got over a gate further along, so what with pulling, pushing, and falling (me) we managed to clear a way through. The main trunk of the enormous tree was completely across the road, blocking it. (Note: I did recce this walk 10 days ago, so guess the tree fell down during that terrific storm we had overnight earlier this week).  Onwards and upwards through the wood, now rather hot, to the breezy ridge taking us back to Cadmore.  Enjoyed by all, but 6 or so miles was enough!

10 of us set off from Lane End village car park in perfect walking weather - sunny skies and a gentle breeze. First through Finings Wood, then  fields and a track down to Colin Kennedy's gate.  Crossing the road, we then walked up through Moussell's Wood to the top at Little Frieth..  We took the path inbetween 2 cottages to reach wonderful views of the Hambleden valley.  Onto the large wild flower meadow at the edge of Frieth where we enjoyed the blanket of white daisies and more views.  Into the woods again, ooccasionally having to navigate around (or over/.under) fallen tree trucks to reach our banana break, where some cut logs were ideally situated for seating (good view again).  Up the chalky path and along a track to reach the road near Parmoor, then along and across more fields to Moor Common.  This is a bog area and was covered in buttercups, but with orchids appearing inbetween (Common Spotted, Pyramid and Marsh). Just another half-mile and we were back at the car park. A great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Just 5 of us this morning, enjoying a walk in very pleasant warm weather with a gentle breeze and occasional sunshine. A welcome change from the great heat we've been having.  We started from Pullingshill Wood.  I'd added a section to the start, to go and see Monks Corner, so after a bit of a "meander" we found it.  Monks Corner and Jerome Cottage, build early 20th century and lived in by Jerome K Jerome ("3 men in a boat").  The buildings have marvellous frieze panels and roundels of painted terracotta all around. Originally build for Conrad Dressler, sculptor and producer of Medmenham Ware. Then on through part of Marlow Common North nature reserve before starting the main walk.  Down the hill and up again, past the beautifully carved wooden owls.  On to Lower Woodend, past Woodend Farm then down and up again to Hutton's Farm.  We enjoyed views of the valley then down through woods, stopping at ideally-placed tree stumps for our banana break. On through the village of Hambleden, then a steep climb up and along to Rotten Row (with it's rather "unloved" duck pond).  We then went down again into Homefield Wood to visit the BBOWT nature reserve there.  One of only 3 sites in the UK where the Military Orchid can be found.  There were not that many, but good to see.  Finally we climbed back up to our cars.  I was reliable informed at the end that the walk was actually 7.5 miles, with 1,000 ft ascent - yes, it was quite hilly - and enjoyed by everyone.

9 of us met at Southend Common (1.25 miles NE of Stonor and not the easiest place to get to!).  Weather was cloudy and cool, but it didn't rain and occasionally the sun came out to warm us up.  We went down Shakespeare's Way through the woods with many rhododendrons in full bloom. We followed the long path through Stonor Park to the road, then a level track to the steep uphill for a panoramic view.  Arriving at Turville Heath Barn most of us partook of hot refreshments (our "banana Break") before setting off again.  We walked past Turville Grange then further on past Turville Court to descent to the edge of Turville (more great views).  Then the ascent on the Chiltern Way, to finally reach Southend again. A pleasant morning's walk in good company.

A group of thirteen set off from Bradenham skirting the manor and crossing Bradenham Woods then into Bradenham Beeches. We made our way uphill to see a small part of Grims Ditch, a linear earthwork still visible in parts of the Chilterns, dating from the Iron Age. We continued on to Lacey Green, stopping for our break overlooking the Aylesbury Vale. Then return to Bradenham to complete the circuit. A walk in good weather with woods, open fields, meadows and even a slow worm across our path!
