Well End Wander

A beautiful Spring morning, not a cloud in the sky, warm and a gentle breeze, brought 21 of us out for a walk by the river.  From the car park near The Spade Oak we ambled beside the river Thames and into Marlow. We stopped for our banana break by the statue on the Causeway (The Charles Frohman memorial, Grade 11 listed, depicting a nymph, sculpted by Leonard Merrifield).  We then walked over the famous suspension bridge. This is a smaller scale version of the Chain Bridge over the river Danube in Budapest, both designed by William Tierney Clark. We passed the Compleat Angler then went left along the road to the bottom of Winter Hill at Quarry Wood.  One long steep and muddy path took us to the top of the hill where we rested and enjoyed the view.  A long gentle descent followed, then across Cock Marsh to the river again. Over the railway bridge, past the marina and back to our cars.  A really enjoyable walk.

Naphill Circular

Fifteen of us walked on a dry and sunny day from Naphill down through a wood and across a wheat field with a lone muntjac to Upper North Dean where we admired the houses and the topiary. Then along towards Flowers Bottom past the sheep and up and over and down to Speen church. Then steeply up to Denner Hill Farm and, after our banana break, we went along towards New House Farm before a steep descent to Bryants Bottom and up into Piggotts Wood. Down to Lower North Dean and return to the start. Shades of the Grand Old Duke of York with its many ups and downs, sometimes very steep, but we were rewarded with lovely moss and wild primroses and some very good views and a good feeling of having done well at the end!

 

Wooburn Wander

On a dull, slightly drizzly, morning seven of us walked up through Farm Wood from Wooburn car park. Then we were on even ground through to Mill Wood, then fields, to pass Over's Farm. Muddy tracks and fields skirted the edges of a fairly new and large chalk pit before reaching Dipple Wood.  Fields, a bit of road, then fields to reach Odds Farm, stopping to observe some Highland cattle.  We walked through Odds Farm estate park homes, with some interesting front gardens, then a path beside Hedsor golf course. Finally dropping down through Farm Wood to the car park. A good walk, pleasant company, and enjoyed by all.    

Bledlow Village to Routs Green

A small group of us and one dog started walking from The Lions pub in Bledlow, ascending on the Midshires Way to Hempton.  Here we turned left along the Icknield Way before joining the Chiltern Way to Callow Down Farm.  Callow Down Farm dates from the 17th C and is a listed building, nestling in a scenic location.  From here we again ascended to Routs Green, stopping here for a view over the valley, looking across to Lodge Hill and Loosley Row/Lacey Green just about managing to pick out the windmill on the ridge.   It was a rather grey overcast day for most of the walk.  Our route then skirted Lodge Hill and took us back to Bledlow.  There were some good views from several points on the walk.  The photos show Bledlow Church and cottages seen at the end of the walk.   

 

Piddington Loop

Eleven of us set off briskly from Piddington on a cold grey morning hoping there wouldn't be too much mud and preferably no rain.  We were lucky on both counts!  We were aiming for Wheeler End Common via Barn Wood.  We crossed the Common to Denham Wood, noting the bluebells poking through the wood floor and I was remembering what a wonderful sight the bluebells are in that location in early Spring.  We then passed through Great Wood and along to Toweridge.  From here we could look across the A40 valley to West Wycombe Church and mausoleum.  Passing down the side of West Wycombe Park, viewing the house and grounds, we crossed the A40 to climb up the other side of the valley to Cockshoots Wood.  We then tackled the steep descent to Ham Farm and our cars parked in the lay-by.  

 

Lacey Green to Bradenham

Fifteen intrepid walkers prepared for some very muddy conditions set out from Lacey Green Windmill along the road  down Kiln Lane to Highwood Bottom passing a full size wooden sailing ship en-route to Turnip End.  On through the  lovely valley of Flowers Bottom before climbing up to a very good viewpoint before reaching Walters Ash RAF station.  We walked to the cottage in the woods and down to Bradenham Manor for our banana break. Past Bradenham church then going north-west to Smalldean Lane and up to Callows Hill with wide ranging views across to Lodge Hill and beyond before returning past a garden decorated with an eclectic mix of household items and Gomme’s Forge and to the start. Good views and good company and no rain! 

Snowdrop tea at Radnage

Six of us met at the layby to walk to Radnage church to see the snowdrops and have some cake. It was muddy to start (and finish) with but it stayed dry through the walk. The snowdrops were lovely as you can see and the cakes were also lovely. This combined with a couple of hills made for a nice walk.

Lane End Loop

Our select group of four set off from Lane End car park, in just a little drizzle.  After that, there was hardly any rainfall, in contrast to the forecast!  We walked through fields down and up to Mousells Wood, then through Little Frieth and descended down Adam's Wood.  The tricky last section, steep and with wet chalk/mud/leaves, was handled well (sticks helped). Skirting Skirmett, we climbed up to Parmoor, then through part of Frieth village, enjoying the displays of snowdrops at the church. Down and up again towards Lane End, we walked past Wycombe Court House and up to the high street. A "duck pond tour" took us back to the cars.  Yes, there was mud, puddles, and quagmires by some gates, but a little more track/road walking avoided the worst. Enjoyed by all!
